How to Extend the Life of Your Coffee

How to Extend the Life of Your Coffee

Not all coffee drinkers drink a pot of coffee daily. Some individuals must watch their caffeine intake, so they must limit the amount of coffee that they drink. Certain brewing methods, such as the AeroPress, only use a small number of coffee beans per cup. Using this method it might take you a month or longer to go through a bag of coffee beans.

Coffee beans are not like other pantry staples. They do have a short shelf life for maximum flavor. Coffee beans will quickly lose their flavor within 1 – 2 weeks of being opened. Depending on when the coffee beans were roasted, this time frame could be significantly shortened by the time that you receive the coffee beans. For this reason, Lavie Coffee ships our coffee beans on the same day they are roasted. We ensure that the freshest possible coffee beans make it to your doorstep.

Does Coffee Go Bad?

Coffee beans do not go rancid after 1 – 2 weeks, and they are perfectly safe to use. However, they do begin to lose their oils and flavors after this period. To get the maximum amount of flavor out of your coffee beans, you should either purchase the coffee beans in small quantities or store them under optimal conditions. Lavie Coffee recommends only purchasing 1 – 2 weeks’ worth of coffee beans at one time and replenish them as needed. Otherwise, the coffee beans will lose their optimal freshness before you get a chance to use them.

How to Store Coffee Beans

Coffee beans store best when they are purchased as whole beans. Pre-ground coffee loses its freshness within 1 week, and the optimum flavor is within 20 minutes of the beans being ground. Coffee degasses as it sits on the shelf, and pre-ground coffee degases at a faster rate than whole beans.

Whole beans should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark location. Avoid storing your beans in the refrigerator or freezer as they may absorb the moisture in these locations. This will cause your beans to lose their freshness at a faster rate.

Lavie Coffee has both whole beans and pre-ground coffee available in different grind sizes. We make it easy to start your day off right with a cup of Lavie Coffee. View our full selection of high quality coffee beans at Lavie Coffee.
